Native Trees of the Village of Euxton

The Aspen

Aspen - Populus tremula, of the family - Salicaceae.
The Aspen is related to the Black Poplar (Populus nigra).
The Aspen flowers in February and March, with its male and female catkins appearing on seperate trees.
It is a very hardy deciduous tree that is distinguished by its shimmering appearance.   The fluttering leaves of the Aspen are readily caught by the slighest breeze, allowing the very pale underside of the leaves to be revealed.   It has a maximum height of about 20 metres, and is mature at about 45 years.


It is found in a fairly wide range of habitats from wet lowlands to mountain ledges.   The Aspen is however is not tolerant of dry locations, as it tends to favour damp locations.


It is distributed well throughout both Britain and Ireland. It is
also found throughout Europe, North Africa and North Asia.
The fluttering leaves of the Aspen are readily caught by the slighest breeze, allowing the very pale underside of the leaves to be revealed.
The Aspen flowers in February and March, with its male and female catkins appearing on seperate trees.  It is propagation naturally by the distribution by airborne seed, the fresh seed germinate very quickly.


Timber from the Aspen is a light coloured wood that is used for matches, clogs and timber flooring.   The Aspen wood has little or no use as a firewood.
