Armetriding Cotton Mill . As so many early English villages of the early days, Euxton being based upon three major streams, one of which, the major stream the River Yarrow, gave way to "Water Power" for industry and production. This all being prior to the industrial age gained by steam power. Armetriding Cotton Mill was one of the major industrial developments of that time. Power for Armetriding Cotton Mill came from water supplied from the "mill leat" that provided water power a number of industries besides Armetriding Cotton Mill. The Armetriding Cotton Mill is also be known as the Bobbin Mill or Bobbin Shop. It was built in the 18th century when the corn mill leat was tapped to drive its water wheel. The power for the mill came from a cast iron Pelton wheel that stood motion-less in the old near derelict building after a ~century of powering the old mill. The mill was rescued from dereliction in the 1980's and converted into a house. On the opposite side of the lane to the house look for evidence of steps down the steep slope which might have led from Sparrow Hall, the mill owners home. |
